How to Hang a Poster – A Simple Guide to Perfect Results

Posters are a great way to brighten up your room, office, or student digs. Whether it's your favorite band, a piece of art, a classic film, or an inspiring quote, a well-hung poster can really add atmosphere. But how do you hang a poster neatly without damaging the wall or the poster itself? Here's how – step by step.

Step 1: Choose the right place

Before you start hanging, decide where your poster will look best. Consider:

  • Height: Hang posters at eye level for the best effect.
  • Light: Avoid places with direct sunlight, as this may cause the poster to discolour.
  • Wall type: Check whether your wall is smooth, rough, painted or made of brick – this will determine the best way to hang the poster.

Step 2: Choose the right method

Depending on how permanently you want to hang the poster (and whether you want to avoid damage to the wall), you can choose from the following methods:

1. Adhesive: Poster strips or double-sided tape

  • Use special poster strips or removable double-sided tape.
  • Perfect for lightweight posters.
  • No holes in the wall or adhesive residue.
  • For best results, follow the instructions on the packaging.

2. With pins or nails

  • Quick fix, especially on wooden or plaster walls.
  • Use push pins in the corners or small nails.
  • Less suitable for valuable or fragile posters.

3. With washi tape or decorative tape

  • A creative and wall-friendly way.
  • Choose a tape that releases easily (washi tape is ideal).
  • You can apply the tape visibly as a decorative element.

4. Framing

  • Gives a neat and professional appearance.
  • Protects your poster from dust and damage.
  • You can hang the frame with a hook, nail or special wall strips for frames.

Step 3: Ensure a straight suspension

Use a level, measuring tape, or a piece of masking tape to ensure your poster hangs straight. It's a shame if it hangs crooked, especially if you look at it every day.

Tip: Have someone watch from a distance before you finally attach the poster.

Extra tips:

  • First unroll the poster and, if necessary, place it flat under a heavy book overnight to remove any curls.
  • Laminate your poster if you want to hang it in a damp room such as a bathroom.
  • Relocatable? Then use putty or reusable adhesive strips.
